Repairing the skin’s barrier is essential to the road to correcting skin types and conditions. Before applying a chemical exfoliating solution, the skin’s barrier or protective layer should be intact. The protective layer of our skin is the “guard dog” preventing the bacteria, pollution, toxins, and germs from entering into the skin.

How do you know if the barrier is impaired? Skins presenting as dry, excessively oily, blemished, or sensitive are in need of repair. The skin’s pH should be slightly acidic with a pH of 4.5 to 5.5.

When skin is too alkaline, the skin becomes dry and sensitive. One of the common skin conditions of dry and sensitive skin is eczema. Aging skin can be minimized if the barrier is balanced with equal amounts of oil and water (hydrolipid fluid).
